How Nuclear Throne Changed the Way I Think About Bagels

There are many more reasons why you should spend at least a couple of evenings at Nuclear Throne.

Rogue-like is a timeless genre… What can we talk about if Rogue itself, having turned over in its grave tens of thousands of times, gets to Steam. Therefore, the demand for those same “bagels” has not gone away; rather, on the contrary, it is only increasing.

The genre is evolving, hybrids are being created. Either they will make a roguelike with CCG elements, or they will completely combine it with a farm simulator, as Atomicrops did.

And from all this diversity, sometimes you forget about the presence of the simplest and strongest pillars of the genre.

My acquaintance

I got into bagels this summer. There was a lot to try and The Binding of Isaac, And Dead Cells, And Enter the Gungeon, And Risk of Rain 2 and others. In general, there were a lot of good projects, a lot of passable ones, but one way or another, the games that I mentioned are well known to many. But about Nuclear Throne, as it turns out, far fewer people know. And I myself am not far away. That is, I knew that there was such a bagel, it seems that the creators of Enter the Gungeon were inspired by it, I remembered it from the frames on the side – at the time of its release this decision seemed very controversial to me.(I admit I was wrong)

Who came up with these frames??

Bagel without cons

Nuclear Throne, without exaggeration, incorporates the coolest features of the genre:

Many characters that change the gameplay – There is

The need for character discovery – There is

Progression during the race https://rhino-bet.co.uk/bonus/There is

Rich arsenal – There is

Good bestiary, interesting locations, original bosses, unpredictable AI, crazy bullethell – there is, there is, there is

How does this work

The formula of the game is very simple – start a run, select a character. Left mouse button – shooting, right – ability. There are enemies on the map and you need to kill them. Killed all enemies – got to a new level. If you have accumulated enough experience at a level, you can choose a modifier for yourself. Loaded the boxes – received weapons and ammunition. Why am I doing all this?? Moreover, the player is left with only crystal clear gameplay, no unnecessary elements and mechanics that unnecessarily burden the brain.

So what is the advantage??

For myself, I have identified two main advantages of Nuclear Throne in comparison with other bagels:

Firstly, control over the situation in the game.

Now let me explain: as you ascend to the nuclear throne, nothing can stop you except yourself. Again, unlike the same Isaac, from Risk of Rain, from AtomicRops, randomness is minimized here.

You won’t have to restart the run because your build didn’t hit, you won’t end up in an impassable room, you won’t get stuck in the middle of the run because you don’t have the right weapon. All your deaths are your mistakes that you need to learn from.

I didn’t know that snipers explode after death? Now you’ll know and won’t fall for it again. Yeti threw a car at you and one-shotted you? So keep your distance in the next wound.

I used to think that without randomness, like in Isaac, it would not be possible to make the races so diverse, but Nuclear Throne showed me that it is much more interesting to learn from your mistakes and notice hundreds, if not thousands of different nuances than to rely on randomness.

Once I realized how it worked, it changed my idea of a good roguelike so much that I started playing run after run to gain experience and learn something new. The fact that you now see a little chaos on the screen is just out of habit. The throne allows you to control the process if you are worthy of it. You can set the pace at which you feel comfortable playing, you just need to reduce the number of mistakes in your run.

Secondly, efficient AI

Seriously, these guys will make any bagel veteran sweat. The fauna in the throne seems to live without you. A simple looter can make you sweat at times. Because they move chaotically, they shoot unpredictably, for example, he can shoot three times at the point where he saw you, and the fourth time he can shoot in advance. Scorpios will try to keep their distance, but if you decide to take advantage of this and get closer, there is nothing stopping them from meeting you and kicking you back. I’m generally silent about Yetis and their dashes.

In general, even after many hours, even the most ordinary mob in the first location, which you have seen hundreds of times, can pleasantly surprise you. By the way, golden versions of mobs can also diversify the first locations. In this coloring, the freaks become even more dangerous and if you are not concentrated enough, this encounter can be lethal for you.

Characters

Let’s talk a little about the characters, because, as I already said, different heroes can change the gameplay quite a lot, I’ll tell you about a couple so that you can get to know the rest.

Robot – an extremely convenient character for beginners, because his ability allows you to eat any weapon and gain either health or ammo. That is, you found a cannon, and you already have two excellent ones – so don’t be shy, throw it into your firebox and burn it down for extra HP.

Or here Plant – his ability is to shoot a seed. Where it hits, vines grow there that prevent enemies from moving. It’s also an extremely useful spell that will save your skin more than once, the main thing is to be able to use it when the situation requires it.

Here Melting (in localization “melted” brrr) not the most productive hero and definitely not the easiest for beginners, but his ability is very cool and fun. After killing opponents, you can activate the spell and their corpses will explode. This way you can kill the next enemies, and with their help others. By the way, you don’t take damage from these explosions. But the character has very few hit points and is still a bit specific.

Bosses at a Glance

As for the bosses, they are not given such a strong emphasis in the throne as in other games, that is, they appear, but in fact, you don’t even have to concentrate your attention on them and, sometimes, it’s more useful to clear the location of other mobs and then proceed to the boss.

However, this does not mean that they are completely light. Again, it all depends on your ability to control the situation. Their attacks are still interesting and you can be sure that you will die from them more than once.

Something like this. By the way, the game is currently on a discount on Steam and you don’t mind paying 144 wooden ones forever for this product, so I’ll leave the introduction to you. The game will definitely brighten up a couple of evenings for you, and for some a couple of hundred, because the development potential in the game is great.
